The group originally started out in 1995 on a LISTSERV® based in Germany.The founder Alisdair MacRae Birch and some of the original members were members of a Jazz Guitar Dial-Up Bulletin Board which ran from 1982-1988. JAZZGUITAR-L, initially was a way for Jazz Guitarists living in Europe to connect with one another. Growing out of the great European Jazz Guitar scene, it became very popular, with artists and fans alike. Our membership list expanded very quickly and added many professional guitarists and studio players.
On Sept 2, 1999, with the demise and constant overloading of our server we decided to move the group to eGroups and were called the jazzguitar list. In late 1999 eGroups merged with OneList and the combined company decided to use the eGroups name. In April, 2000, the OneList name disappeared from the merged entity, and all lists formerly housed on the OneList service officially became "eGroups". As part of that merger we had to change our name to the jazz_guitar list.
On June 28, 2000 Yahoo announced that it was going to acquire eGroups. The merger became complete in early January 2001 and being hosted on Yahoo Groups became known as the Yahoo! Jazz Guitar Group.
On August 7, 2013 Yahoo under the leadership of CEO Marissa Mayer revamped Yahoo! Groups implementing "Neo" Groups. Sadly it was a total disaster, and despite the overwhelming protest from all Yahoo Groups moderators and members, petitions on change.org, moveon.org, forums filled with complaints and published interviews with Marissa Mayer filled with screeds of protest, she choose to ignore them all. This was the start of the beginning of the end of Yahoo Groups and a barometer of the eventual downfall of Yahoo as a whole.

On October 16, 2019 Yahoo announced that it would shut down Yahoo Groups on Monday, October 21, 2019 and all Groups content removed on December 14, 2019.
On November 27, 2019 We moved the whole group, members, messages and files to Groups.io: The Jazz Guitar Discussion Group
